Ankara for skirts and more!

Ankara is one of West Africa's traditional fabrics, but was originally known  to be made by Dutch from waxed cotton for the Indonesia market . The fabric however became popular in Africa partly due to the distinctive African motif/pattern or durability of the fabric to Africa weather... Ankara is an adorable fabric that is worn for many occasions and can be made in different styles and combine with other fabric as you like....

Check out my latest Ankara skirts and how I have styled them for spring/summer look....

Leftover fabrics....

Self drafted 6 gore pencil skirt from  McCall's 6886 dress  and McCall's 7198 pants leftovers fabrics. What not to love? I am loving  the simplicity, comfort and the fabric combination of this skirt.
The skirt was lined with tricot knit, used 1.5 inches wide non-roll elastic for the waist (no waist casing), interfaced and finished the hem, less than 2 hours later viola.... a flattering skirt was made.

 Silly me

Enjoy!!!!

Pencil skirt...... Self Drafted

All you need is your waist, hip and length measurement ............and viola, however for me, I made a 1" wedge at the high hip for my "rear"
This fabric speaks for itself, I got it on sale for 20% of original price and bought the remaining 12 meters, I just love the look and feel of it, . I know I will be making a dress for sure and sell the remaining if possible,  I am making a wrap dress for one of my clients already, she also fell in love with the fabric when she saw my skirt yesterday......
To get the tapered hem look, I reduced the hem width my 6" of my hip measurement, this fabric has a bit of stretch so it was so comfortable to walk around all day at work.

What are you up to dear readers? enjoy the rest of the week!!!!!

Simplicity 2215 Skirt - A Cynthia Rowley Pattern

First of all, I want to thank you all for all the wishes and prayers. I am feeling much better now and trying to take a day at a  time all , I give all Glory to Almighty God for everything.
To jump start my sewing, I made this beautiful S2215 pattern in a rich oriental brocade fabric. These pictures didn't do justice to the skirt at all but I will share anyway until I am able to showcase it better.

My Review
Fabric: Oriental Brocade lined with a beautiful pink silk cotton
Pattern Sizing: 14 to 22. I cut size 16 and modified the waist to fit.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?: Pretty much
Were the instructions easy to follow: I didn't pay attention to the instructions until I wanted to insert the zipper on the pocket, which I didn't understand at all, I eventually removed the pocket from the side the zipper was inserted.
Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made: I lengthened by 4", lined the skirt and  omitted one pocket
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Nothing to dislike, though would have preferred deeper pleats, but still love how this turned out .
Conclusion: Very great pattern

Newlook 6130 Combo

Here is another great combination and addition to my wardrobe. I have used this pattern several times so not too much detail this time, for my full review please check here
For the skirt, I used a fabric (I think cotton-poly) that's been in the stash forever, and lined with a cotton silk (love the feel of silk), the top is cotton eyelet from fabricland on one of my recent trips
I am trying to have a SWAP for fall, presently making a vision board and planning my time hopefully I get it going sooner than later....-
Enjoy!!!

Skirt & Shirt---NL6130 + M6035

This is going to be a simple post. I sewed the skirt pattern of Newlook 6130 in a ponte knit fabric. This fabric is soft, I just love it.

1.Cut size 14 and graded up to 16 from hip down.
2. Added a 0.5" wedge at the hip and lengthened by 2",
3. Didn't put the zipper but added an elastic to the waist (no didn't make an elastic casing as shown below). I used the zig-zag function of the machine to sew the elastic and the waist together.

The shirt was made last year or early this year but didn't review it because it has already been reviewed here and here. For this version, I used black cotton voile.

All pictures were taken after a long day wear ..... so the wrinkles

Sewn on elastic

It's getting so cold here in Calgary, the temp this morning was -6 celsius but presently at -3 and partly cloudy. What's the weather like in your area???..... Are you feeling it yet????? Whatever it is, enjoy every moment  :)
