Finally......and a coverstitch question

Wao, it's been a long time....... I honestly miss blogging and sewing, but I am glad to be back.......

Life has been so busy but proud to say my thesis is corrected and submitted. Now I am seriously thinking about what to wear for my graduation . I will love to wear a dress and if possible make it myself, any suggestion of a lovely dress pattern will be appreciated.

I will be posting some pictures of the things I made in march soonest.

I have been thinking and I need your input please....
Please I will appreciate your advice sistahs... I have been looking at a coverstitch machine Janome 1000CP, cost from my dealer is $569 Canadian with tax is about $600. Do I really need a coverstitch machine?
I got some knits and I will be making them this month, but I just want to be sure if I really need this or I can do with a double needle as I have read . I made a knit top last month , and for the hem I just serged it and topstitched with two rows of straight stitching, it's not so great but it's okay ... I have not tried the double needle though and not sure if this will give a better finishing .

All your suggestions will be so much appreciated.

Have a lovely weekend........ ~ Aminat

  2. Congrats. Last year this time I was going through the same thing. As far as the coverstitch machine goes in my opinion you can make do with the twin needle. Recently I was considering buying a new serger with coverstitch capabilities but have found that I do not sew enough with knits to justify it. I really do like the twin needle. On the other hand if you don't have a serger at all and are considering buy one, by all means get one with all the bells and whistles. If that is not the case just thread up your double needle and save that money to buy more fabric. After all I'm sure you NEED more fabric!

  3. I use a lot of knits and love my coverstitch machine. I would not like to go back to using a double needle.

  4. If you sew a lot of knits you'll love the Janome coverstitch. I bought one because I hated changing the settings on my serger and the twin needle never really worked for me. Check out World Sewing on Queen St in Toronto. They offer crazy prices! They'd probably ship... Congrats on your thesis!

  5. Congratulations on your Thesis.

As for the coverstitch machine, I have the Janome 900 CP, and honestly, don't use it as much as I should. I tend to serge the hems and sleeves of my knit garments and fold up and final stitch with my sewing machine. Only as of late have I taken to using it. In answer to your question, if your serger is providing the finishing on your garments the way you like, then it isn't necessary. I've never used the twin needle on my sewing machine, so unsure about that.

  7. Congrats on completing thesis. That I am sure is a major undertaking.

I just purchased a coverstitch machine-Janome 1000CP, awaiting its arrival from the dealer. I sew a lot of knits, a lot! I don't want to go back to using the twin needle. I have a coverstitch on my serger but hassle to set up. There is a great discussion about Janome coverstitch machines at PR on the message board. Check it out before you make your decision.

I don't have a coverstitch machine and usually just use my sewing machine as you do, but I would like to get one :)

  10. Hi again Animat, I use a twin needle to hem my knits. It's quite simple really. I use fleecy or wooly nylon in the bobbin (wound by hand so it doesn't lose it's stretch and eitheer two spools or a spool and a bobbin for the top . It's important that each spool winds off in a different direction so they don't get tangled. I also often will fuse a strip of interfacing behind the hem and this avoids a ridge forming between the two lines of stitching. Also loosen the tension by quite a bit. Hope this helps.

  12. Congratulations! What a wonderful accomplishment. No suggestion on graduation dress pattern. There are so many great dress patterns out their. I would go for with classic lines and comfortable to wear.

I can't comment on the coverstitch machine as I do not own one. I want one though. lol Good luck on your search. Look forward to seeing your latest creations.

  14. If you do a google search, you can find Janome 900CP for $249 at several places online and maybe they could ship to Canada.

I bought mine a few months ago and the coverstitch machine has opened up the world for me as far as knits are concerned. I love tees, sweats, dressy knits, etc. I just posted a picture of a top I did on my blog today.
